Istat: the basket changes, but in January the worst deflation since 1959

The Istat basket changes and now includes services such as car or bike sharing, but the price trend in Italy remains negative. In fact, it gets worse. According to preliminary estimates by the Statistical Institute, in January the national consumer price index fell by 0,4% compared to December, when inflation remained nailed to zero. On an annual basis, however, the index fell by 0,6% last month, registering the worst figure since September 1959, when inflation was -1,1%.

The decrease is mainly linked to the accentuation of the tendential fall in the prices of energy goods, especially those that are not regulated, i.e the fuels (-14,1% from -8% in December), and the slowdown in the annual growth in the prices of services, with particular reference to transport (+0,2% from the +2% of the previous month).

As for the so-called "Shopping cart” (which includes the prices of the most consumed products), the prices of food, home and personal care products increased by 0,6% compared to December and by 0,1% on an annual basis (from -0,2, XNUMX% in December).

Returning to paniere, gluten-free pasta and biscuits, non-alcoholic beer, ginseng coffee at the bar, vending machine drinks and tax assistance for calculating housing taxes have also entered. On the other hand, HiFi systems, DVD recorders, satellite navigators and computer courses leave the scene. The basket for the calculation of consumer price indices consists of 1.441 products (there were 1.447 in 2014), aggregated in 618 representative positions (614 last year).
