Inflation rears its head in Italy, above all thanks to the race in fuel prices. According to preliminary estimates released on Friday morning by Istat, inflation reached 0,9% in January, the highest value since September 2013, when a similar figure was recorded.
As for the so-called "shopping cart", the prices of food, home and personal care products increased by 1,1% on a monthly basis and by 1,9% on an annual basis (it was +0,6 % in December).
On the fuel front, diesel has undergone a real surge (+13,9%, it was +3,3% in December). Gasoline, on the other hand, increased by a further 6 percentage points (+9,3%, from +3,3% in the previous month).
The prices of other fuels grew by 2,2% in quarterly terms – due to the increase in LPG – and mark a trend reversal on an annual basis (+0,5%, it was -1,4% in December).
In the same sector, we note the increase on a monthly basis of Diesel for heating (+3,5%) which, for similar reasons of comparison with the cyclical decrease recorded in January 2016 (-5,2%), records a particularly marked acceleration of trend growth (+11,2%, it was +2,1% the previous month).
On a monthly basis, the prices of diesel for means of transport increased by 3,7% and those of petrol by 3,3%.
