Istat, unemployment stops at 8% in June

Unemployment is stable at 8% in June, according to the Istat survey, down by 0,3% on an annual basis. The change compared to May is -0,021 percentage points, similar to that of the last two months.

Employment in June was 56,9%, equal to 22.917 thousand units, down by 0,1% compared to May and up by 0,1% on an annual basis. The decline recorded in the month, explains Istat, is determined exclusively by the female component.

The youth unemployment rate fell to 27,8% in June, with a conjunctural decrease of 0,4%. The June figure is the lowest since the beginning of the year but remains higher than that of June 2010 which was equal to 27,5%. In July and August 2010, it stood at 26,8 percent.

As regards gender differences, male employment is stable compared to May and decreases by 0,1% on an annual basis. That of women is down by 0,2% compared to May and up by 0,4% on an annual basis.

In the meantime, however, the CGIA warns that 76 workers and employees risk losing their jobs when they return from vacation. The alarm is raised by processing the employment forecasts of Istat and Prometeia.

The number, albeit of considerable size, is less than the 98 jobs lost in the same period of 2010 and the 82 in 2009. "In the third quarter of this year - explains Giuseppe Bortolussi, secretary of the CGIA of Mestre - we will probably lose 76 places. And once again the weakest sections of the labor market will pay the price: young people, women and foreigners".

Although immigrants prove to be very dynamic in finding a new job, the loss of a job, by compromising their regular presence in our country, could have very negative social consequences. "It is necessary – Bortolussi affirmed – to review downwards the number of new entries, favoring the reintegration into the labor market of foreigners who have been present in our territory for years".
