Istat: unemployment at its lowest since 2011, but the inactive are on the rise

Mixed and matched numbers on the Italian labor market come from Istat. Apparently, the news is positive: according to the Institute of Statistics, in fact, in August the general unemployment rate it fell 0,3% from July, leveling off to 9,5%, the lowest since November 2011. Down too the youth unemployment rate: -1,3% month on month, to 27,1%. In this case it is even the lowest figure since 2010.

absolutely, the number of unemployed decreased by 87 thousand units.

But be careful: these data are partially balanced by theincrease in the inactive (+73 units), i.e. people who not only don't have a job, but don't even look for one, and for this reason are not counted among the unemployed. Istat points out that in August the number of inactive people rose for the first time in the last five months.

As for instead the busy ones, their number remained substantially stable compared to July (-1.000 units).

As a result, it also stays put the employment rate, at 59,2%. This is the all-time high, even if the figure remains much lower than the European average.

However, the employment numbers hide a rather lively internal dynamic: the employees increased by 32 thousand units (+27 thousand those with stable contracts), while independent workers (freelancers, entrepreneurs, artisans) decreased by 33 thousand units.

Furthermore, breaking down the data by age group, it emerges that employment increases only among the over 50s (+34 thousand). On the other hand, only decreases were recorded in the 15-24 age groups (-23 thousand), 25-34 (-2 thousand) and 35-49 (-10 thousand).

From the point of view of gender, female employment increased slightly (+3 thousand), while male employment decreased slightly (-4 thousand).
