The scourge of unemployment in Italy is becoming more and more serious. In October, according to provisional data from Istat, the jobless rate rose to 8,5%, up 0,2% from the previous month and 0,1% year over year. It's about the highest level since May 2010, when the rate had reached 8,7%.
The number of unemployed is equal to 2,134 million, an increase of 2,5% compared to September (+53 thousand units). On an annual basis, however, the increase is 1,8% (+37 thousand units). The enlargement of the area of unemployment, explains Istat, “regards exclusively men“. Inactive people between the ages of 15 and 64 decreased by 0,4% (-60 thousand units) compared to September.
Il inactivity rate is 37,8%, with a drop of 0,1 percentage points both in terms of the quarter and on an annual basis.
For young people between 15 and 24 years, among them the unemployed are 29,2%, down by 0,1 percentage points compared to the previous month, but growing on an annual basis. In October 2010 it was 27,7 percent.
The rate of female unemployment on the other hand, it dropped by 0,2% both on a monthly and on an annual basis, reaching 9,4%. The same figure referring to the male component rises by 0,5% compared to September, reaching 7,9%, while on an annual basis the increase is 0,3 percentage points.
