I vegan preparations and homemade beers enter the Istat basket of goods for the survey of consumer prices, updated as every year. In the basket used for 2017 there are 1.481 elementary products (1.476 in 2016), grouped into 920 products, which are in turn collected into 405 aggregates, explains a note.

There are a total of 12 new goods included: meat preparations to be cooked, vegetarian and/or vegan preparations, fruit and/or vegetable centrifuges at the bar, craft beer, Smartwatch, sports wrist devices, sound bars (sound amplifier bars), action cameras, inkjet cartridges, dryers, spin dryers and home-related insurance services.

The inclusion of vegan goods is explained by the fact that, in the last year, 7,6% of Italians followed a vegetarian or vegan diet with an increasing trend due to vegans who have practically tripled in the last year for a total of 1,8 million people. This is what Coldiretti affirms on the basis of Eurispes data relating to 2017 in commenting on the new Istat basket which recognizes the changes that have taken place in the spending behavior of Italians.

In 2016, the turnover of vegan and vegetarian products reached 357 million euros in turnover in large-scale distribution alone, with an increase of 18% in the last 12 months. Alongside vegetarian products, craft beer also enters the basket for which Italy is witnessing the boom of microbreweries which ten years ago numbered just over thirty and now number around a thousand for an estimated production of 45 million litres.
