Istat: from 2019 retirement at 67, life gets longer

The Institute confirms its estimates. In 2016, deaths decreased by 5% and life lengthened by 5 months: for these reasons, the age for old-age pensions is set to rise to 67 in 2019. It will be a decree from the Ministries of Economy and Labor which will certify the new step.

Life expectancy is rising and the retirement age will consequently rise to 67 years. Just as the unions are asking not to trigger the increase in the retirement age and the government is holding back due to lack of resources available to finance the halt to the new increase, Istat has released the 2016 data which certify the lengthening of the life of the population . Last year deaths decreased by 5% and life was lengthened by 5 months, just the time necessary to trigger the raising of the requirement to 67 years.

In 2016, more than 615 deaths were recorded among resident citizens, 32 fewer than in 2015. In relation to the number of residents, 2016 individuals per thousand inhabitants died in 10,1, against 10,7 in 2015. The reduction in the number of deaths it is territorially homogeneous, although it is wider in the North-West (-5,6%) and in the South (-5,7%).

At 65, life expectancy reaches 20,7 years for all residents, extending by five months compared to that recorded in 2013. Istat confirms its estimates therefore, on the basis of current rules, the age for the old-age pension should reach 67 years in 2019. It will be a decree of the ministries of Economy and Labor which will have to certify the new step.
