Istat: from 1977 to today 1,5 million more unemployed

In 35 years the number of unemployed in Italy has grown by one and a half million. According to Istat, in fact, the unemployed have passed from 1 million 340 thousand in 1977 to 2 million 744 thousand in 2012, while the unemployment rate has grown from 6,4% to 10,7% and shows no signs of stopping its run.

To rise, in particular, is the unemployment rate of 15-24 year olds, which rose from 21,7% in 1977 to 35,3% in 2012, an increase that involved both men (from 18,1% to 33,75) and women (from 25,9% to 37,5%) and which mainly affected Southern Italy, where the rate soared up to 46,9%.

But the configuration of the employed has also changed over the last 35 years: the incidence on the total number of those working in agriculture has dropped from 11% to 3,9%, just as the percentage of workers in the industry (from 38,4% to 28,5%), outlining the process of outsourcing of work in Italy, which brings the share of workers employed in services to 67,6%.

Finally, the percentage of employees is growing, rising from 68,8% to 75,2% due, above all, to the large increase in the female share, given that the male figure, in this case, has remained almost unchanged since 1977.
