Istat: business confidence collapses, to the lowest since 2009

The general index calculated by Istat fell to 75,5 points, from 79,0 in August, reaching its lowest level since March 2009 (73,2) – Among the various sectors, however, the only noticeable drop is that of market services (from 78,5 to 72,1).

It collapses there trust of Italian companies. In September the relative index calculated by Istat dropped to 75,5 points, from 79,0 in August, reaching the lowest level since March 2009 (73,2). The result derives from the drop in confidence in market services firms, not offset by the improvements recorded in the other three sectors (manufacturing, construction, retail trade).

Among manufacturing companies, the figure rises from 87,3 points in August to 88,3 in September, while the figure for construction companies rose from 82,4 to 86,5. Production expectations and assessments on inventories slightly improve.

The detailed analysis of the climate of confidence by main groupings of industries (Rpi) indicates an improvement in production expectations in capital goods (from -8 to -4) and in intermediate goods (from -13 to -12), and a deterioration in consumer goods (from -4 to -6). In construction, assessments on orders and/or construction plans worsen (from -44 to -46) and expectations on employment improve (from -17 to -5).

The confidence climate index fell from 78,5 to 72,1 among market service companies and increases from 75,3 to 78,5 in those of the retail trade. In market services, assessments and expectations on order books worsen (from -20 to -26 and from -11 to -17 respectively) and the balance of expectations on the economy in general decreases (from -43 to -50).

In the retail trade, the confidence climate index increased both in large-scale distribution (from 63,1 to 70,5) and in traditional distribution (from 85,5 to 86,2).
