Istat, extra-EU trade drops in January: imports -8,5% on year, exports -3,5%

Istat, extra-EU trade drops in January: imports -8,5% on year, exports -3,5%

Lean January for Italian trade with non-EU countries. This was announced by Istat, which recorded an 8,5% year-on-year decrease in imports and 3,5% in exports. Compared to the month of December, on the other hand, in January exports recorded a decrease of 2,4% while imports decreased by 0,4%.

The monthly drop in exports to non-EU countries is mainly affected by energy (-18,5%), followed by capital goods (-2,7%), while the sales of intermediate products (+0,4% ) are growing slightly. As far as imports are concerned, the economic downturn is attributable to energy (-5,8%) and, to a lesser extent, capital goods (-3,2%). Net of the energy component, the trend is positive (+1,6%).

In the last quarter, despite the -19,8% in energy sales, the economic trend of exports to non-EU countries is slightly positive (0,2%). Net of the energy component, on the other hand, the cyclical growth of exports was 1,4%.

In the same period, imports (-1,4%) recorded an economic downturn of 1,4%, mainly due to the 15,2% drop in energy purchases, net of which, imports recorded a expansion of 4,7%.
