Istat: 42,6% of pensioners receive less than a thousand euros a month

In Italy, 42,6% of pensioners receive a pension of less than 1.000 euros per month. This was revealed by Istat, specifying that 38,7% of pensioners receive between 1.000 and 2.000 euros, 13,2% between 2.000 and 3.000 euros, 4,2% between 3.000 and 5.000 euros. Only 1,3% receive more than 5.000 euros. And today, Minister Pier Carlo Padoan also spoke about pensions, who, at the end of Ecofin, declared: "As Prime Minister Renzi said, pensions clearly don't touch each other".

According to Istat, overall expenditure on pension benefits increased by 1,8% on an annual basis in 2012, reaching 270,720 billion euros. Its incidence on the GDP grew by 0,45% (from 16,83% in 2011 to 17,28% in 2012).  

The average annual amount of pensions is up by 2,3% (253 euros) compared to 2011, at 11.482 euros, 253 euros more than in 2011 (+2,3%). In all, there are 16,6 million pensioners, around 75 fewer than in 2011; on average, each of them receives 16.314 euros a year (358 euros more than in 2011) taking into account that, in some cases, the same pensioner can also count on more than one pension. If 67,3% of pensioners receive only one pension, in fact, 24,9% receive two and 6,5% three and the remaining 1,3% receive four or more pensions.

52,9% of pensioners are women, who on average receive lower pensions than men (13.569 euros against 19.395 for men). More than half of women (52,0%) receive less than a thousand euros a month, compared to about a third (32,2%) of men.

Looking at the age groups, 26,5% of pensioners are under 65, 50,0% are between 65 and 79, the remaining 23,5% are over 80. As regards geographical areas, 47,8% of pensions are paid in the North, 20,5% in the central regions and the remaining 31,7% in the South.

There were 2012 people who started receiving a pension in 626.408 (new retirees), while 701.101 people stopped receiving them in 2012. According to Istat, old-age pensions absorb 71,8% of total pension expenditure, survivors' pensions 14,7%, invalidity pensions 4,0%; welfare pensions account for 7,9% and indemnity pensions for 1,7%.
