Israel-Hamas, still dead in Gaza

A new Israeli air raid against the Gaza Strip has left three Palestinian militants dead. Medical sources report it. Soon after, according to Israeli television, a rocket fired by Hamas men killed three Israelis in the southern part of the country, near the border with the Gaza Strip.

Yesterday a series of Israeli raids on the Strip resulted in the death of the military leader of Hamas, Ahmed Jabari. Today, the online site of the Haaretz newspaper writes that since then more than 100 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel. About 25 were intercepted by the Iron Dome System defense system ("steel dome").

Israel could now extend its operation into the Gaza Strip, while the cabinet has authorized the recall of IDF reservists, the Israeli armed forces.

Meanwhile, during the night, the UN Security Council met urgently to discuss the situation. During this meeting behind closed doors, the 15 members of the Council listened to the reasons presented by the representatives of the Israeli and Palestinian delegations.

The meeting was convened at Egypt's request. According to the Palestinian representative to the UN, Riyad Mansour, the raids also caused the death of 9 other people.

The group of Arab countries wants the Council to "condemn this barbaric attack" and "send a strong message to ask for an end to hostilities", indicated the ambassador of Sudan.

The United States representative at the UN, Susan Rice, however, firmly supported Israel's military response to the attacks of the Palestinians by Hamas: "Nothing justifies the violence to which Hamas and other terrorist organizations have resorted to against the Israeli people".
