Italy “officially” recognizes the State of Palestine, we are ready, after an agreement on Gaza, to ask the Arab and Muslim countries to recognize the State of Israel. The President of the Palestinian National Authority, Abu Mazen, delivers this political message to Rome through two meetings, defined as very cordial: the first at the Quirinale with the president Sergio Mattarella, the second at Palazzo Chigi with the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Israel and Palestine, what Mattarella said
President Mattarella was very clear on the path to take regarding the Middle Eastern crisis: "We hope that the solution 'two states two peoples' be immediate. Without this perspective there will always be explosions of violence,” the Head of State told the Palestinian leader who shortly before had once again condemned the massacre of October 7 without ifs or buts.
Israel and Palestine, Meloni's opening
The request of the ANP is also heard by the government. Meloni explained in the evening on X that “in reiterating full support for the action of the mediators for the cessation of hostilities in Gaza and the release of the hostages still in the hands of Hamas, I confirmed the strong commitment of the Italian government in all sectors, including that of assistance provided to the civilian population of the Strip, with particular reference to the 'Food for Gaza' initiative.
And again: “In this context, I reiterated Italy's commitment to working towards a lasting political solution, based on the 'two-state' perspective, In which Israel and Palestine co-exist side by side in peace, with safety for both", added the Prime Minister who also said she had "reiterated the government's willingness to play a leading role in the stabilization and reconstruction of the Strip and to support the process of reform and strengthening of the Palestinian institutions".
G7, support for US plan for truce in Gaza
Meanwhile, still yesterday the leader of the G7, meeting virtually, “reaffirmed the importance of respecting the truce in Lebanon, which represents an important step forward towards peace” and “renewed their support for the US-sponsored plan for a truce in Gaza, with the release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian assistance to the civilian population, with a view to putting an end to the crisis and ensuring a path towards a two-state solution”. This is stated in the statement released by the Italian presidency at the end of the videoconference summit chaired by Meloni.
Trump, the Hill's warning on new protectionisms
Meanwhile, later the election of Donald Trump as US president, also arrives from the Quirinale the warning on new protectionisms. In one of the passages of Mattarella's speech, yesterday, on the occasion of the Christmas greetings with the diplomatic corps, the Head of State said: "International cooperation finds one of its strong points in economic relations. The claim of self-sufficiency contrasts with the evidence of the reality of the facts. Here too, they would like to erase the evolution of the world of the last three centuries, invoking themes such as the national security to justify new protectionism. Distorting policies, obstacles to free trade – Mattarella highlighted – significantly alter the conditions of access to markets and damage the interests of consumers”.
