Iseo, Christo: "I don't drive or use computers"

I'm in my studio for 14-15 hours a day but for 50 years I always take the stairs, as there is no lift”: it is the unprecedented and unexpected self-portrait that the author of the catwalks on Lake Iseo which are enjoying enormous public and critical success, track on the "Corriere della Sera".

“I don't know how to drive or even operate a computer!”: it's a Christo, stage name of Christo Vladimirov Yavachev, at 360 degrees the one in the interview given to Corriere della Sera. The artist born in Bulgaria but who has long defined himself as stateless, is the star of the moment after that “The Floating Piers”, his latest effort, has attracted thousands of visitors to Lake Iseo already in the first weekend of opening to the public. The work, a footbridge installed on the waters of the Lombard lake, cost 15 million euros and will be passable for free and 24 hours a day until Sunday 24 July.

A project that was initially supposed to be Argentinian but which then became Italian, thus favoring Christo's return to Italy 40 years after his last work, created in Rome on the Aurelian Walls: "Lake Iseo - the artist tells Corsera – got the better of the Rio de La Plata and the Tokyo Bay”. The Floating Piers generated a media moment of an international nature, followed by webcams and posted to capacity on social networks.

Christo also revealed some aspects of his private and professional life: “I don't know how to drive, I don't use a computer, I draw with my fingers! I'm in my studio 14-15 hours a day, but for 50 years I always take the stairs, as there is no lift. I like the movement." On the choice of the Lombard lake: “I wanted to act on people's desire and curiosity. Here you are not lost in a virtual reality, there is real sun, real humidity, real rain, real wind, there is no reproduction of a flattened image”.
