Iran, Rohani re-elected president

The reformist Hassan Rohani was re-elected president of Iran in the first round of the elections: he collected 56,3% of the votes against 38,9% for the conservative Ebrahim Raisi – This is good news for the world and for the West.

In Iran Rohani was elected president for the second time. This was announced by the Ministry of the Interior. The ministry communicated that the definitive formalization of the results will be given at 14 pm local time. According to data provided by the ministry, Rohani obtained 14.619.848 preferences out of 25.966.729 voters, equal to 56,3%. His opponent, the conservative Ebrahim Raisi, instead obtained 10.125.855 preferences, settling at 38,99%.  

The other conservative candidate, Mostafa Mirsalim, got 297.276 preferences (1,14%), while the other reformist candidate Mostafa Haschemi Taba, who had called on his supporters to vote for Rohani, got 139.331 votes. Voter turnout was high. According to initial estimates, over 42 million people voted and the 70% threshold was exceeded. Meanwhile, the first counting operations have begun in many polling stations.
