Vatican spokesman Federico Lombari denies that both the Belgian Bernard De Corte is the new president of the IOR: "I don't know, I don't confirm", said the Jesuit commenting on the first rumors. The post has been vacant since May 24, when Ettore Gotti Tedeschi was unanimously fired by the bank's board. However, De Corte remains the candidate who seems to have the best chances.
As anticipated by Il Sole 24 Ore, another change is also expected in the board of directors of the Vatican bank: the German Ernest von Freyberg should replace the current acting vice president, Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz. The new president will be chosen between these two names and that of the Italian member, Antonio Maria Marocco.
Lombardi added that the Council of Cardinals and that of superintendence of the IOR should meet "before Monday and if they have something important to tell us, they will tell us before that date".
