In 2022 the United States have confirmed themselves as the main investor and recipient country of investments direct esteri, both in terms of stock, with respectively 6.581 billion dollars outgoing and 5.255 billion dollars incoming, and in terms of annual flows, with a value of billions outgoing and 285 billion incoming.

THEEurope confirms itself as the main recipient of US FDI with a stock of 4.027 billion, equal to 61% of total overseas FDI, of which almost 76% is concentrated in four countries (United Kingdom, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Ireland). Europe is also the main investor in the United States, with a stock of 3.396 billion (65% of the total).

USA-Europe: Italy in 15th place among global investors

The stock of US FDI in Italy in 2022 fell to 26,6 billion (-3,3% compared to 2021) and continues to represent less than 1% of the total. The stock of Italian investments in the USA it, however, increased to 39,8 billion (+16,4% compared to 2021). Italy has risen to fifteenth place in the ranking of investing countries but continues to represent less than 1% of the total. As regards FDI flows, in 2022 the USA invested 404 million (-71%), while Italian FDI flows to Italy increased by 69%, reaching 5,4 billion dollars.

Among major American companies who invested in Italy in 2022-2023: Whirlpool, Enovis, Nordson, Oshkosh, Borgwarner, JM Huber and UPS, and the investment funds APX Capital Group, RedBird Capital Partners. Among the main Italian investors in the USA in 2022-2023: Gruppo Ferrero, Gruppo Campari, Illva Saronno, Piovan, Rina, Technoprobe, Technofirma, Investindustrial and Carel Industries.

Mergers and acquisitions in Italy: performance in the spotlight

With regard to mergers and acquisitions in Italy, in 2022 growth was moderate. According to data produced by Ion Analytics, Italian M&A activity has shone in a difficult macroeconomic context, both in terms of value and volume of deals. In 2022, 980 deals were closed with a value of approximately 104 billion euros, compared to 844 deals in 2021 with a value of 85 billion.

The debut of Cosmoprof North America – Miami

In this context, the first edition of Cosmoprof North America – Miami, the event that inaugurated the 2024 calendar of the Cosmoprof network. For the first time the Miami Beach Convention Center was the scene of this event which joins the traditional appointment with Cosmoprof North America – Las Vegas scheduled for July. 

The event is intended as a window to explore business opportunities throughout the American continent and specifically with particular attention to Latin American operators. The event was positively received by our companies: 50, including finished products (brands and contractors) and production chain, participated in the fair.

United States and fragrances drive Made in Italy cosmetic exports

The central-southern area of ​​the American continent represents approximately 4% of the country's total exports.Italian cosmetic industry, but shows strong growth dynamics: between the first nine months of 2023 and the same period of 2022, exports to this destination recorded a positive change of 42% with a value close to 200 million euros.

Among the cosmetics products in Italy most requested in this region comes in first place alcoholic perfumery, which concentrates over half of Italian cosmetic exports to Central and South America. This is followed by hair care which holds a value share of 30% and skin care with 13%.

In the first nine months of 2023, the United States confirmed its central role for the exports of the Italian cosmetics industry. The export value to the USA it was in fact over 716 million (+40% compared to 2022), equal to approximately 14% of the total. Also in this geographical area, the most requested category of Made in Italy cosmetics is alcoholic perfumery, followed by make-up and skin care.
