Internet Explorer, goodbye to the Microsoft browser in 2022

The historic Internet access software closes its doors definitively on June 15, 2022, after more than 25 years of history: in the 2000s it had 90% of the market, now only 5%

Internet Explorer, goodbye to the Microsoft browser in 2022

It had been in the air for some time, given that it is notoriously the slowest and least functional browser for accessing the Internet, but now the decision is official: in just over a year, on June 15, 2022, Microsoft will no longer provide support for Internet Explorer, after more than 25 years of use. The American giant had already discontinued Internet Explorer support for Microsoft Teams last year and will do the same for Microsoft 365 in the coming months. Furthermore, the software will become incompatible with other home services such as Outlook, OneDrive and Office365 starting as early as August 17, 2021, slowly moving towards complete discontinuation. On June 15, 2022, it will finally disappear from all versions of Windows 10, with the exception of the Enterprise ones, dedicated to particular areas, such as hospitals and logistics chains.

Microsoft had been trying to eliminate the browser for years by launching the new Edge software, also given that Explorer is chosen as the gateway to the Internet by only 5% of global users (source NetMarketShare), who have long preferred Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or Safari, for iOS users. Now, in fact, the historic browser will definitely fall into disuse, given that Microsoft will no longer release security updates for the program, which is in itself a decisive reason not to use it anymore. The American giant therefore relies entirely on Edge, which in the meantime has already surpassed Explorer (7%) and which, among other things, is based on Chromium, the same code with which Google develops Chrome, which is the most used navigation software in the world. world.

With the farewell to Explorer, a page of Internet history closes: according to some surveys, in its peak phase between 2003 and 2005, Internet Explorer had a market share of over 90%. As of early 2009, it still attracted 65% of anyone who surfed the internet globally.
