Infrastructure: the subport tunnel also starts in Genoa, the third project for the creation of the logistics hub

And three. The third project of great works that will transform GenoVa in a logistics hub for trade in Europe, through which trade from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe will pass. After the construction works of the Third Pass and those for the Outer Dam those also left for the Subport tunnel of Genoa, the first underwater tunnel in Italy and the largest in Europe.

The tunnel will be built by Aspi, Autostrade per l'Italia, with an investment of 1 billion euros, will employ 5 thousand people including related industries and will be opened by August 2029. The new tunnel will bring improvements both for city connections, both for the port of Genoa, a fundamental gateway to the Mediterranean Sea for goods to and from the whole world. The work, already imagined in 1992 in the context of the redevelopment of the ancient port for Expo Genoa, "represents the excellence of Italian engineering and which contains all the characteristics of a new way of conceiving infrastructures" says Aspi.

3,4 km long from San Benigno to the Foce district, the tunnel will have 2 separate tunnels, one in each direction, with a diameter of 16 meters which will run at a maximum depth of 45 metres. Designed with a view to environmental and social sustainability, the tunnel will improve city connections and accessibility to the port of Genoa, saving over 1 million hours of travel per year. The tunnel project also includes an urban redevelopment intervention: above the structure, in fact, in collaboration with Studio Renzo Piano, 10 hectares of urban parks and cycle/pedestrian paths will be created.

Toti: a new piece to revolutionize Liguria

“This construction site adds to those of the major works underway, which will contribute to revolutionizing Liguria: the Third Crossing and the new port dam” said the president of the Liguria Region John Toti. Third Pass dei Giovi, the railway hub built by the Cociv Consortium, led by the Webuild Group, will connect Genoa to Milan by high speed. The new Outer Dam of Genoa is instead a unique work in the world which will serve to strengthen the Italian port system by facilitating the transit of large commercial ships and to protect the docks and port structures.

“The start of work for the construction of the sub-port tunnel is a further step forward towards one epochal transformation of Genoa's mobility" said Paolo Piacenza, AdSP Extraordinary Commissioner of the Western Ligurian Sea.

“This is a work that will change the appearance of this city” said the CEO of Autostrade, Roberto Tomasi.
I underline the advantages in terms of travel, valorisation of the asset and infrastructure, and the possibility of attracting tourism which is far superior to the value of the work. “This work is unique at a national and European level. It is a sub-port tunnel which will be the fourth in the world in terms of size and which therefore makes us proud and allows us to return to the country's engineering glories which in the 60s were considered the best in the world” added Tomasi.
