Inflation, the greatest loss in the South: almost 2019 euros burned in the pockets of every Italian since 1.800

Between June 2019 and the same month of 2022, theinflation it burned on average 1.756 euros in the pockets of every Italian. However, the figure hides important territorial differences: the per capita income decreased in absolute value especially in northeast (-2.104 euros), but in relative terms, inflation hit above all the Noon (-10%). The numbers are contained in an analysis by the Tagliacarne Study Center on the impact of the Istat index of consumer prices on the income of Italians in the last three years.

Inflation: the ranking of the regions most and least affected

At the regional level, the cost of living was felt more forcefully in Trentino Alto Adige, where the loss of purchasing power reached 2.962 euros (-12,3%). They follow in the standings Emilia Romagna (-2.136 euros), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (-2.049) and Lombardia (-2.021). On the opposite side of the ranking, with values below 1.400 euros, there are instead Calabria (-1.334) Campania (-1.303) Basilicata (-1.295) and Molise (-1.287).

But the loss in the South is heavier

However, the Centro Studi reiterates, it is particularly in the South that the inflation rate has a more generalized effect on the per capita disposable income. As many as 6 of the 10 regions that record percentage drops greater than the national average are, in fact, in the South, where inflationary pressures on house, energy and food prices are the most important factors.

“The regions of the South risk being discriminated against not only because of the increase in prices, but also for the lowest level of income and because of the composition of their consumption basket - explains Gaetano Fausto Esposito, general manager of the Centro Studi Tagliacarne - If, for example, we relate the reduction in purchasing power to the total of goods and services produced, we see that the loss of the South is about a third higher in relative terms to that suffered by the Centre-North, with very high peaks in Sicily, Puglia and Calabria. Furthermore, the greater component of food consumption by families in the South, in the face of particularly high price increases in recent months, exposes them to further penalisation".
