Industry, Istat: orders and turnover down

In September in industry there was a drop of 4,6% for turnover and 6,8% for orders compared to the previous month, in which exceptionally positive changes had been recorded. In terms of turnover, the most marked decrease occurred on the domestic market (-5,5%) compared to the foreign one (-2,8%). The Istat communicates it.

Turnover realigns itself to levels slightly lower than those recorded in July (-0,6 percentage points) with differentiated effects between the downturning domestic market (-1,5 points) and the expanding foreign market (+1,8 points ).

On average over the last three months, the overall index marks a large increase (+2,3%) compared to the previous three months (+2,5% for domestic turnover and +1,8% for foreign turnover). Capital goods recorded sustained growth (+5,0%).

Corrected for calendar effects (there were 22 working days as in September 2015), the total turnover decreases in tendential terms by 0,3%, the synthesis of a decrease of 1,3% on the domestic market and an increase 1,8% on the foreign one.

The seasonally adjusted turnover indices show cyclical downturns for all the main groupings of industries, which are particularly significant for capital goods (-6,8%) and energy (-4,6%).

The raw turnover index decreases, in trend terms, by 0,3%: the largest contribution to this decrease comes from the internal component of intermediate goods.

As regards turnover, the largest tendential decrease concerns the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (-12,3%), while the greatest increase concerns the manufacture of machinery (+5,8%).

In comparison with the month of September 2015, the raw index of orders marks an increase of 2,6%. The most significant increase is recorded in the manufacture of means of transport (+10,6%), while the greatest decline is observed in the manufacture of chemical products (-3,3%).

When the data relating to September 2016 was released, the usual retrospective review of the indices was carried out (see the methodological note).
