Industry, boom in turnover and orders

Industry recovering in May. Istat recorded a significant cyclical increase in turnover (+1,5%), which brings the index back to the high levels of December. On average over the last three months, turnover increased by 0,9% compared to the previous three months.

Also for orders in May there was a cyclical increase (+4,3%). On average over the last three months, however, the index fell by 1,0%. Corrected for calendar effects (there were 22 working days as in May 2016), total turnover grew by 7,6% in trend terms, with increases of 6,7% on the domestic market and 9,3% on the abroad. In comparison with the month of May 2016, the raw index of orders marks an increase of 13,7%. All sectors recorded increases, particularly relevant for the manufacture of means of transport (+19,5%).

It is the turnover of the agri-food industry that drives growth with a leap of 7,8% in May compared to the same month last year, says Coldiretti with reference to Istat data on industrial turnover in the month of May.

Food – underlines Coldiretti – is a special indicator of the state of the national economy since it is the main item of the household budget after housing with a total amount of 215 billion. Now it is important – concludes Coldiretti – that the signs of recovery move from the industry to the countryside where for many references prices at the origin are lower than the production costs.
