Indonesia: towards the blocking of pirated music sites

The Indonesian Association of Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) will block all sites that allow visitors to download music illegally. The move, announced by the president of APJII, Semmy Pangerapan, will serve to protect local music production.

“The process will be similar to that of a clearing house – explained the president – in which access to unauthorized content is closed”. APJII members will use a platform to audit intellectual property rights, payment gateways and content aggregators. When a user downloads pirated music, his ISP will receive a notification to block the content. The blocking scheme follows rules set by Indonesia's Electronic Information and Transactions Law passed in 2008. The decision will help ISPs expand their business, as some of them are developing businesses in paid music downloading. The Association brings together more than 200 Internet Providers. There are 30 million Internet users in Indonesia.
