India, McDonald's becomes vegetarian

The symbol par excellence of the hamburger has decided to differentiate its offer in the Asian country – It will open its first entirely vegetarian restaurant near two places of worship frequented by thousands of Indian pilgrims.

India, McDonald's becomes vegetarian

McDonald's for us is synonymous with burgers and fries. Not in India. In the Asian country, the sacredness aimed at cows had already forced the 271 restaurants to offer only sandwiches with chicken meat. And now Mc Donald's it will go further, eliminating tout-court any type of meat. The strategy of fast food is in fact of to open exclusively vegetarian restaurants in the next year.

The first meat-free restaurant will open in the middle of next year in the sacred city of Amritsar, near the Golden Temple, the spiritual center of the Sikhs. The second one will be born in the sacred city of Katra, near the cave of Vaishno Devi, which receives millions of Pilgrims every year. But McDonald's plans are long-term and the hamburger giant already plans to open more vegetarian restaurants across the country in the next three years.

In India “there is a huge opportunity for vegetarian restaurants as many Indians are vegetarians”, said Rajesh Kumar Maini, spokesman for the group in the north of the country. “At the moment India is still a very small market – we have only 271 restaurants against the 33 we have worldwide. But when you look at the country's potential, it's one of the first we're focusing on."
