India, the Supreme Court rejects the marines' requests

The Indian Supreme Court rejected the requests of the two marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, who had asked for greater freedom on bail.

According to the Indian broadcaster Cnn-Ibn, the Court rejected Latorre's request to extend his stay in Italy by four months in order to be able to undergo another surgery and carry out treatment and rehabilitation. Latorre has been in Italy since 13 September, following a serious illness suffered in New Delhi. He will have to return to India on January 16th.

The Court also rejected the application presented by Girone, who asked to be able to return to Italy for the Christmas holidays. The two marines are accused in India of killing two Kerala fishermen during an anti-piracy operation on February 15, 2012.

"The government undertakes to participate in the work of the Foreign Affairs and Defense commissions" on the case of the marines, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced today, responding in the Chamber to the requests of the president of the Defense commission, Elio Vito (Fi), who described the news "arriving from India, that the marines have been denied freedom, unjustly and illegally detained in India for almost three years" as "bewildering".
