India, 2013 will be the year of the Stock Exchanges

Next year, experts say, will be the year of the stock market boom… in India. Put like this, the news seems to be of interest only to lovers of emerging markets. But, among the reasons that explain this prediction, there are – and indeed they have a preponderant part – also 'global' reasons, that is valid, if not for all seasons, then for all markets. Both of these reasons are related to politics. The policy so far hasn't been good for stock markets; in reverse! Both the delays and disputes that have marked the way in which European rulers have dealt with the sovereign debt crisis, and the dangerous tug-of-war in America between Democrats and Republicans (first over the renewal of the debt ceiling, then over stimulus measures), have done damage to the markets. But, looking ahead, there are reasons to be hopeful. Between jerks and jolts, European governance has begun to lay out an adequate safety net and it is unthinkable that the crisis will recur again. In America, the 'fiscal cliff' looms, but even here, with an Obama presidency strengthened by reconfirmation, it is probable that an agreement will be found. Once these two obstacles are removed, the sigh of relief of the markets will be felt.
