India: "Consequences for Italy if the marines don't return"

“Our Government has insisted that the Italian authorities respect the commitments they have made with the Supreme Court and return the two accused persons to participate in the trial in India. If they don't keep their word, there will be consequences in our relations with Italy”. These are the explicit threats that have come against our country since Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a statement to Parliament on the diplomatic case it concerns the two Italian marines, charged with the murder of two Indian fishermen and currently on trial in India.

Two days ago the Farnesina had made it known that, "given the formal establishment of an international dispute between the two States, the riflemen of Marina Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone will not return to India upon expiry of the permit granted to them". The one-month license had been guaranteed to allow the two marines to exercise their right to vote in Italy.

According to the Foreign Ministry, "Italy has always believed that the conduct of the Indian authorities violated the obligations of international law incumbent on India", in particular "the principle of immunity from the jurisdiction of foreign State bodies".

THEItalian ambassador in India, Daniele Mancini, has made it known that he will not give up on seeking a solution, even if the rumors that speak of one of his imminent expulsion.
