India, cinema: maxi-fusion to create a cinema giant capable of resisting Netflix & Co.

Maxifusion coming to the world of Bollywood. India's two largest multiplex companies, Rpv and Inox Leisure, they announced on Sunday that they will come together to create a giant cinematographer with over 1.500 screens in 109 cities.

The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals, would help the companies improve efficiencies, reach new markets and optimize costs, thus facilitating recovery after the collapse caused by the Covid-19.

“The cinema projection sector has been one of the hardest hit by the pandemic – he said Ajay Bijli, president of Pvr, in a press release – Creating an economy of scale in order to achieve efficiency is fundamental to long-term survival and combat the onslaught of market-leading digital platforms”.

The reference is to the giants of streaming – especially Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus – which, as the Reuters news agency explains, have made inroads in India, where the pandemic has devastated Bollywood, the film industry known for song and dance performances seen by millions.

PVR it is India's largest multiplex chain with over 850 screens, closely followed by Inox Leisure, with around 650 screens.

The merger follows a two-year period in which most cinemas were closed due to Covid restrictions.
