Fires: from Vesuvius to Sicily is an emergency

Improving conditions in the Messina area, where the largest fires have been tamed - Vesuvius burns, Civil Protection: "Complex situation".

Fires: from Vesuvius to Sicily is an emergency

Flames on Vesuvius, fire for almost two kilometres, smoke visible from the entire gulf of Naples.

The fires that have been burning on the Neapolitan volcano for days are not extinguished. There are two main fires: the first developed from Herculaneum and the second, which flared up in Ottaviano. Now they have merged.

"The situation - reads a note from the Civil Protection - is particularly complex and requires the support of air assets: an S64 helicopter, a Canadeir and a regional helicopter are currently operating".

In the meantime, the situation seems to be improving in Messina, where firefighters, forest men, civil protection and law enforcement seem to have managed to tame the largest fires in the city and in the province, but the damage amounted to hundreds of thousands of euros. The small outbreaks in the Peloritan mountains and in other areas of the city are still active, but the situation is normalizing thanks also to the action of a Canadair.
