According to Unioncamere estimates for the first quarter of 2013, they will be 80 fewer employees in companies between January and March. To make up the negative balance, the 137.800 direct hirings of employees which are not enough, however, to compensate for the 218 planned exits.

Among the ways of entering the world of work, apprenticeships continue to struggle. Much more often entrepreneurs choose the first fixed-term contract. At the economic level, temporary employment relationships are increasing, even if theirs number has shrunk by 23% year-on-year.

For the president of Unioncamere Ferruccio Dardanello, the cause of this stagnation in hiring is "the persistence of the recession and the fear that it will continue in the coming months", which "is leading companies to adopt an increasingly cautious attitude on the employment front".
