Businesses: for women, the recovery is slower

Between January and September 2021 there will be new registrations female-led businesses in the registers of the Italian chambers of commerce they were more numerous than those recorded in the same period of 2020 (+7 thousand), but the levels reached in the first nine months of 2019 remain distant (-9.200). This is what emerges from the Unioncamere and InfoCamere Observatory on Female Entrepreneurship.

Despite the increase in enrolments, between 2020 and 2021 the weight of new female businesses on the total enrollments decreased by almost two percentage points, going from 27,1 to 25,4%.

The South is the area of the country that in the first 9 months of 2021 records the highest number of new women's businesses (22.500). Furthermore, in these regions, the percentage weight of business entries led by women on the total number of new businesses is close to or exceeds 26%.

The North West follows (over 16 thousand businesses born in the period), but with a lower percentage incidence (23,7%).

The almost 12 new women's businesses in the North-East and the more than 14 in the Center represent 24,8 and 26,3% respectively of the total number of entries.

Compared to the pre-Covid era, almost 3.300 new businesses were lost in the South, 2.300 in the Centre, 1.900 in the North West and 1.700 in the North East.

The comparison with the 2020 data, on the other hand, shows a recovery in the desire to do business among women that is higher in the North West: in these regions, there are almost 2021 more enrollments between January and September 2.500 compared to the same period last year, while in the Center I'm +1.700. The South (with +1.600 new women's businesses) and the North East (+1.300) show a slightly slower recovery.

As for management, between 2011 and 2020 administrative women increased by 93 units, passing from 23,2 to 24,4% of the total. Thus, the number of directorships held by women today is just under one million and 140 thousand compared to the million and 50 thousand of 10 years ago.

However, their average age is growing: if in 2011 43% of female administrators were over 50 years old, at the end of 2020 the over 50s are 58%.
