Businesses, bankruptcies are less than before Covid

The number of failed companies remains below the alert threshold and, above all, remains above below pre-pandemic values. This is certified by the latest report by Unicameras-Infocamere which uses data taken from the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce.

In detail, in the first six months of 2021 the number of companies forced to take the books to court to close their business was equal to 4.667 units, compared to the 5.380 companies that initiated bankruptcy proceedings in 2019. In the first half of last year, however, 2.924 bankruptcy declarations were filed, a figure that however is affected by the imposition of the lockdown and the prolonged stop to the activities of the courts.

Ithe business failure rate Italian companies - given by the number of bankruptcy proceedings opened for every thousand registered companies - therefore stands at a value of 0,76.

"Taking the first half of 2019 as a reference - the last one not affected by the consequences related to the health emergency - the balance sheet for the first half of 2021 shows decreasing values for almost all regions, for one national average which stands at -13,3%”, underlines Unioncamere. The exceptions are Basilicata (+53,6%) and Molise (+41,7%), where, however, a few more cases are enough to determine strong relative variations. The only region which, despite a sharp reduction compared to the first six months of 2019 (-16,1%), is above the threshold of one per thousand in the bankruptcy rate is Lombardy.

Under the sector profile, showing an acceleration compared to the first half of 2019 are the supply of energy (+60%), healthcare and assistance (+21,6%), transport and warehousing (+19%), education (+13.3% ) and insurance and financial activities (+3,2%).
