Female businesses: 40% born after 2010, 12% led by under 35s

UNIONCAMERE REPORT – Over 13 women-owned businesses after 2010 are active in financial and insurance activities, more than 18 in professional, scientific and technical activities, just under 11 in information and communication services.

Women entrepreneurs are twice as young, by date of business start-up and by incidence of female entrepreneurs under 35. In fact, 4 out of 10 women's enterprises have been created since 2010 (among men, only 3 out of 10 have less of 7 years). Furthermore, the 162 businesses headed by female entrepreneurs under 35 are more than 12% of the total female-driven companies (1.325.438), while, among men, they are 8,5%. These are some of the ideas that emerge from reading the data on women's businesses as at 30 June 2017, processed by the Observatory for women's entrepreneurship of Unioncamere-InfoCamere.

The 554 women's businesses born in the last 7 years are slowly changing the sectoral and geographical map of women's business. Some sectors in which the presence of women has always been rather consistent seem in fact to reduce their attractiveness. First of all agriculture, in which 16,3% of the female presence in the enterprise is concentrated but which represents less than 11% of the enterprises led by women born after 2010.

In the last 7 years, the entrepreneurial component of women in tourism and commerce has slightly strengthened, with over 64 businesses in accommodation and catering, 26 in rental and travel agencies and 155 in commerce. Overall, these represent almost 45% of the women's businesses created since 2010. Among the "freshmen" entrepreneurs, the inclination to try their hand at some service sectors with less female participation increases: over 13 women's businesses after 2010 in financial and insurance companies, more than 18 in professional, scientific and technical activities, just under 11 in information and communication services.

Lombardy, Lazio and Campania are the most "welcoming" regions for women's businesses from further away as well as more recently established. On the other hand, analyzing the incidence of the more recent women-owned enterprises on the total number of businesses led by women, the growing dynamism of the Apulian new female entrepreneurs emerges (who represent 44,3% of the women-owned enterprises registered at the regional level), of the Lazio (43,8 %), Tuscan (43,2%).
