Restaurants and bars populate the Italian streets, in five years there are almost 10% more. The largest number of these activities are concentrated in Rome, Milan and Naples. This is what emerges from the photograph taken by Unioncamere-Infocamere on data from the Register of Italian companies between 31 December 2011 and 31 December 2015. At the end of last year there were 367 businesses, including restaurants (197 businesses) and cafes (170). , scattered throughout the country, up by over 31 units compared to five years earlier.

But if more and more entrepreneurs are ready to bet on the pleasures of cooking and a good cup of coffee, only a few are able to keep their business going 5 years after its birth.

Of the companies born in 2011, 3 out of 4 lowered the shutter within five years and over 45% could not resist the third year of life.

However, this is not the case everywhere: in some large Italian cities the numbers improve significantly. In Milan, Naples, Rome and Florence the mortality levels of the activities registered in 2011 are lower to the national average, both for bars and restaurants. In particular, the most "resistant" catering businesses are found in the Tuscan capital where 57% of these are still on the market after five years. While bars seem to have an easier time especially in the capital of Italy, here 49% of establishments pass the five-year test.

At the regional level, Lombardy recorded the highest number of bars and restaurants in Italy as at 31 December 2015 (27.679 and 29.285 respectively), followed by Lazio (22.430 restaurants and 17.925 bars) and Campania (17.754 restaurants and 15.145 bars). ). But in relative terms in the last five years Sicily has achieved the most marked growth (+15%, driven by the restaurant sector +16%), followed by Campania (+14%, with a peak of +15% for bars) and Umbria (+12%, driven by bars +13%) .
