New businesses are increasing in 2021 but we are still far from pre-Covid values. While the growth of the productive fabric of the South is encouraging, especially in Campania. This is what emerges from the Company Register of Chambers of Commerce, the official register of Italian companies. According to Movimprese - the statistical analysis carried out by Unioncamere and InfoCamere - 2021 ended with good momentum from the entrepreneurial activities which, between January and December, recorded 332.596 new registrations (14% more than the previous year).
However, after the slowdown imposed by the lockdown in 2020, the rebound in the birth rate did not coincide with a full recovery of the pre-pandemic figure, maintaining a gap of around 20 fewer openings than in 2019 and around 50 fewer than the average for the decade before the pandemic.
The resumption of new registrations was not followed by a physiological flow of deletions from the registers chambers. As noted by Movimprese, since the beginning of the pandemic and throughout 2021, the suspensions or restrictions on the exercise of different types of economic activities have resulted in a "surplace" effect in company closures. The 246 cessations of activity detected between January and December constitute the lowest value in the last 15 years, even more contained than the already record recorded in 2020.

The result shows a positive balance of just under 37 thousand units, for a third only in Campania (+12.732). The north-west marks an increase in the stock of companies of over 20 units, thanks to 91 registrations and 70 cancellations. Lombardy stands out with 14 more businesses in one year. The Center follows, with an overall balance of just under 20 businesses due to 72 registrations and 52 terminations. Lazio drives the growth of businesses among the central regions, with +14 thousand. While the black jersey goes to the north-east which records the lowest increase in the number of businesses (over 9 thousand units), the difference between 60 thousand registrations and 51 thousand terminations. Veneto and Emilia Romagna are the regions with the highest balances.
