Enterprises: +20 thousand in the second quarter, but -32% on 2019

Positive, albeit slowing down, in the second quarter of 2020 the balance between openings and closures of Italian companies. In April, May and June, the number increased by 19.855 units against the over 29 in 2019. The South is above all contributing to the result, although it should be noted that this is the lowest figure in the last 10 years. 

This is what emerges from theMovimprese quarterly analysis, conducted by Unioncamere and InfoCamere, on data from the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce.

A Weighing on the birth-death rate of companies it is the Covid-19 effect which had already had serious repercussions in the first quarter. “Between April and June, in fact, the weakening of the Italians' desire to do business continues - explains Movimprese - with 57.922 registrations of new companies against 92.150 in the second quarter of 2019, 37% less. At the same time, cancellations are slowing down to an even more accentuated extent, which amounted to 38.067 this year compared to 62.923 the previous year, 39,5% less”. 

All quarterly financial statements contributed above all crafts (32,5%), which closed the period with a positive balance of 6.456 companies (18.943 registrations of new companies against 12.487 terminations).

From a territorial point of view it is the Mezzogiorno that stands out: the 8.905 more companies in the South represent, in fact, 45% of the entire national balance. As far as the individual regions are concerned, Campania is in first place, with 3.143 companies more than on 31 March last. Following are Lazio (+2.386), Lombardy (+1.920) and Puglia (+1.859). 

Even at the sectoral level, the credit balances involve all the macro sectors. “First in the ranking” is trade (+6.291), followed by construction (+5.222) and accommodation and restaurant services (+3.425). In percentage terms, the most significant progress (+1,4% on a quarterly basis) is recorded in business services (2.944 more businesses), followed by professional, scientific and technical activities (+1,3% increase in the quarter, equal to 2.828 more companies) and from financial and insurance activities (+1,1% corresponding to an increase of 1.366 units).

Finally, speaking of the legal form, of the approximately 20 more companies at the end of the quarter, about 65% take the form of individual enterprises (12.972 units). On the other hand, partnerships fell (-1.230 units, equal to a 0,13% reduction in the stock of companies of this type).
