Imago Mundi, Luciano Benetton Collection: Great and North

Imago Mundi traces the profile of contemporary art of an extended territory of North America, which, starting from the extreme north of Nunavut covered with ice, runs through the sunny and undulating prairies of the Mid West, from the sublime and impervious peaks of the Rocky Mountains to up to the now jagged now sandy coasts of the Pacific; in between, lakes, rivers, tundra, forests and metropolises.

Imago Mundi, Luciano Benetton Collection: Great and North

An exhibition dedicated to the North of the American continent: 759 artists shape the contemporary creativity of Central-Eastern Canada, Western Canada and the Inuit and North American Indigenous communities

The visual mosaic of a vast and multiform territory, in which cultural, aesthetic and artistic experiences of rare charm and versatility are expressed: this is “Great and North”, the next stop on the journey of Imago Mundi, scheduled in Venice from 29 August to 29 October at Palazzo Loredan, headquarters of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti.

The plurality of the artistic fabric expressed in these collections corresponds to the diversity of landscapes of this journey that touches Canada and the United States: the Inuit of northern Canada are joined by the natives of the United States and the artists of the large Canadian cities. Painters, sculptors, engravers, designers, architects, photographers, writers, musicians, everyone is present. For their works, they choose oil colors, acrylics, pastels, but also sealskin, soapstone, alabaster, even nails and rose petals.

To keep these suggestions together, it is the recognition of all in a geographical unity on which multiform and stratified cultural experiences unfold, the result of the encounter that has lasted for centuries between indigenous and imported culture. The result is a colorful fresco of this part of the world, in which, in addition to being enchanted by the variety of themes, materials and techniques, there is also room for reflection.

"Great and North" therefore wants to express, right from its title, the grandeur of North America, and invites the visitor to get to know its facets up close, stripping away previous impressions sedimented in his imagination and instead opening up to a sincere, genuine and spontaneous encounter with the 759 artists who, without filters or mediations, expose the essence of their soul on the 10x12cm canvas.
