Ilva, Zanonato: it's not an expropriation

The Ilva decree approved yesterday by the CDM “is built to respect property and not to destroy it. The property can sell if it wants, participates and is informed of all the decisions taken". Thus the Minister of Economic Development, Flavio Zanonato, on Ilva speaking at Unomattina.

"After 12 months – added Zanonato – the plant will be returned to the owners". According to the minister "either you do this or you risk a situation equal to that of the old Bagnoli plant: we are not interested in it because there is no money". And on the commissioner for Ilva, Enrico Bondi, appointed by the government, the minister was categorical: “He saved Parmalat. He is a great executive, a great manager, who will allow us to get out of this situation. We took the best player on the market."

“Ilva's future is extremely important because it is the most important Italian steel company and one of the largest in Europe. Ilva is a powerhouse in terms of production capacity, it is about 10 million tons of steel a year. It has a wharf where 400-ton ships can dock, so it can acquire minerals at advantageous costs. All this allows Ilva – restored from an environmental point of view – to be very competitive. It is a wealth of the country”.
