Ilva: skip the table. The unions reject the Calenda proposal

Skip the table on Ilva. The unions rejected the proposal presented by the Ministry of Economic Development during the meeting held today at the Mise.

According to the workers' organizations in fact, the minister's document Carlo Calenda it does not guarantee the absence of dismissals nor the hiring of all workers with the same contractual treatment.

At today's meeting, the owner of Economic Development had presented a text which established that "at the end of the plan all workers will have a guarantee of permanent employment continuity". Under the agreements, Arcelor Mittal would have had to hire 10 workers, while Invitalia would have had the task of identifying "solutions to give stable prospects for an indefinite period to the workers still in charge of the extraordinary administration" of Ilva.

“To unblock the negotiations on Ilva, the Government has proposed a draft agreement between the parties it ensures permanent employment for all workers currently in Extraordinary Administration under the same current economic and regulatory conditions – explains Calenda in a note – In addition to all this, the Extraordinary Administration has made itself available to implement a plan of early retirement incentives of up to 200 million euros”.

"At the same time, the Government, the Municipality of Taranto and Arcelor Mittal have defined the text of a memorandum of understanding to strengthen controls and checks on health damage, anticipate environmental interventions and launch important compensation measures for the City" , continues the minister.

“The unions – he added – have decided to not adhere to the guidelines of the proposed agreement. The Government believes it has put in place every possible action and tool to safeguard employment, environmental and productive investments also through an enormous amount of public resources (up to now the government has financed Ilva in extraordinary administration with around 900 million euros ). It should be remembered that Mittal's offer envisages investments of 2,4 billion to which must be added 1,8 billion in price which also serves to repay the State and related industries. At this point the dossier passes to the new government".

According to the general secretaries of Fim, Uilm and Fiom however the "non-shareable text" because "the redundancies remain" and "Mittal hasn't moved an inch".

The negotiation is therefore interrupted. According to the unions, it would have been the minister himself who suspended the table, accused by some of "not being entitled to negotiate". But the will to find an agreement, the trade union organizations underline, remains. The leader of the metalworkers of the Cisl, Marco Bentivogli, critical of the gaps in the Government document but also of the tactics of the other trade union organizations, argued that "it is a mistake to throw in the towel and that the negotiations must be reopened immediately"
