Ilva, EU ok to sell ArcelorMittal plants

The extraordinary commissioners of the former Ilva resign. Corrado Carrubba, Piero Gnudi and Enrico Laghi have sent a letter of resignation to the minister of economic development, Luigi Di Maio, with which they leave their office.

The news was announced by the minister himself, through a note from the Mise. The resignations will take effect from 1 June 2019.

"The Extraordinary Commissioners have deemed it appropriate to resign their office to allow the Minister of Economic Development any assessment of the further path that the Extraordinary Administration of the Ilva Group will have to face in the context of the addresses that will be provided by the Special Commission for the reconversion of the City of Taranto"reads a statement from Ilva.

"The new commissioners will be identified by the hour, who for the next month and a half will work alongside the outgoing commissioners to deal with all the events relating to Ilva", declared Luigi Di Maio, according to whom "now Phase 2 begins, in which we will not limit ourselves to the management of the extraordinary administration procedure, but in which we will plan and implement the future of Taranto, focusing in particular on the reclamation activities and on the economic and social revitalization of the territory".

"Wednesday 24 April - Di Maio recalled - the first session of the Permanent Institutional Table led by the Ministry of Economic Development is scheduled".

In the same context, it should be remembered that this morning, 23 April, The European Commission has given the green light to the Liberty House group as a suitable purchaser of several ArcelorMittal steel plants, sold as part of the commitments undertaken by ArcelorMittal to acquire Ilva.

In order to buy Ilva, ArcelorMittal would have had to sell a large package of steel plants to a suitable buyer, according to a European decision in May 2018. Among the assets to be divested are manufacturing sites across Europe, including: a steel mill in Galati, Romania, one in Ostrava, Czechia, and finishing facilities in Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and North Macedonia.
