Ilva, Calenda very tough: "Emiliano doesn't want to reach any agreement"

The tug of war over Ilva continues between Minister Calenda and the Governor of the Puglia Region, Emiliano: the fate of the most important steel plant in Europe is at stake. Gentiloni asks Emiliano and Melucci to withdraw the appeal to the Tar

The fiery tug of war between the Ministry of Economic Development and the Puglia Region continues on the Ilva case. At the end of the table that took place just today at Mise, Minister Carlo Calenda said: “I won't go into the merits of President Emiliano's usual broken statements about me. However, I specify that the only text message I received during the meeting came from Governor Emiliano and was the following: ”.

“If we followed the line indicated by the Governor – continued Calenda through a note issued by the ministry – we would have to cancel the Environmental Plan, or the same effect as accepting the appeal to the TAR. It is quite evident that the Governor, despite the commitments made on advance coverage of parks, health damage and reclamation, had already matured the intention not to reach any agreement at the table. The willingness to withdraw the suspension request alone is not enough because, as explained at the table, it would keep the investor at risk of losing all the investments made until the outcome of the appeal”.

Meanwhile, Premier Gentiloni has publicly asked the president of the Puglia region and the mayor of Taranto to take a step back: “I ask you to withdraw the appeal to the Tar and not to jeopardize interventions for environmental remediation and the work that Taranto has been waiting for for years. On the part of the Government there is full willingness to discuss the issues you have raised. I'm counting on you, Italy and Puglia need loyal collaboration”.
