Ilva, Bentivogli: "The environment is the pivot"

The summit scheduled for today on the Environmental Plan for the Ilva Group has recently concluded at the Ministry of Economic Development, in the presence of the Deputy Minister Teresa Bellanova, among the top management represented by the Deputy President Mattheieu Jehl, Marc Vereecke and Cristina Moro and national and local Fim, Fiom, Uilm.

Vice President Jehl illustrated the Group's health and safety data at European level, declaring that ArcelorMittal in Europe has an average injury per million hours worked, while on the emissions front since 2007 the Group has managed to reduce at all sites of the Group in the continent of 77% of specific particulate emissions and a 39% reduction of SO2 emissions through investments for a total of $1bn.

The Group also has two competence centers that deal with environmental research and study, whose best practices will be made available and implemented in all Ilva sites
According to Arcelor, the environmental plan presented today is in line with the indications of the Hague of 2012 and with the DCPM 2017.

Taranto, Arcelor always stated, will be the first integrated steel mill in Europe and among the few in the world to implement, through full compliance with the limits on emissions, the strictest prescriptions of the EU BAT (Best Available Techniques).
During the presentation, the environmental interventions for macro-areas were illustrated for a total investment of 1.15 billion euros from 2018 to 2023, of which 750 million for the three-year period 2018-2020 and 350 million from 2021 to 2023.

The main interventions include covering the mining parks (raw materials, coke area and agglomerates) and the works will start in 2018, before AmInvestCo takes possession of Ilva. Further investments will be focused on the treatment of rainwater and industrial water, and Arcelor is also expected to enclose secondary mineral parks with windbreak barriers (limestone park).

By May 2020, the closure of the conveyor belts (about 20 km) is expected, and by the end of 2018, the closure and safety of the buildings where the raw materials are handled.
Illustrated the interventions on coke and batteries which concern a total investment of 226 million euros, while on blast furnaces investments of 65 million relating to the dismantling of the AFO3 and the adjustment of the AFO5 after 2020.

Particular attention to the theme of health and safety in the next 6 months will be presented a plan for mapping and removal of asbestos in all sites (Taranto, Genoa and Novi Ligure) through an investment of 65 million euro.

For the general secretary of the Fim Cisl Marco Bentivogli: “The environmental plan is the pivot of Ilva's rebirth and is closely linked to the industrial plan whose environmental sustainability cannot have exceptions. There are resources and tools to achieve this goal, now we need to go into all the details of the plan and speed up the interventions as soon as possible starting from the coverage of the mining parks".

The next meetings are scheduled for 27 November at 18 with the commissioners, on commissioner commitments, while two sessions on in-depth analyzes on the industrial plan are scheduled for 28 November in the morning and on the environmental ones in the afternoon.
