Illy, the coffee that invests in wine

The coffee industrialist Riccardo Illy has decided to invest another two million euros for new vineyards in Montalcino, where it owns one of the historic companies of the Brunello. It's about the cellar Mastrojanni which has seen sales rise by 72% in the last five years and in 2014 reached a turnover of one and a half million. Part of the new resources will be used to recover a village on the Orcia river that Illy is transforming into a farmhouse.

"Wine is a passion for me and in the very long term - the entrepreneur told Luciano Ferraro of Il Corriere della Sera - the idea is to leave a pole of gastronomic luxury to the children, in addition to coffee, the tea of Damman Frères , Domori chocolate and Mastrojanni's Brunello. We are four brothers (together with me Anna, Andrea, Francesco), our children are 9, two already work in the company, the others are studying. And the grandchildren have arrived. We are and will remain a family business”. Which in 2014 produced revenues of 429 million.

As for Mastrojanni, “we bought 3 and a half hectares of vineyards (one for Brunello, 1,5 for Rosso, 1 for Sant'Antimo) – he added -. We then bought the planting rights for another hectare of Brunello and we are working on another 3 new hectares. In total 34 hectares. Mastrojanni was producing 80 bottles when we arrived, now we are at 104, we can reach 200”.
