Nosiola: the only white grape variety in Trentino

Nosiola is a white grape variety grown particularly in the area of Toblino and the Valle dei Laghi, where it is believed to be native, grown on terraces called "frate'", and in Lavis, in the province of Trento. It would seem that it owes its name to the scented notes of hazelnuts present in the wine (in dialect "nosela"), or to the crunchiness and golden color of its berries. The thick skins, late maturation and easy drying make it particularly suitable for drying. In fact, the vine is also used in the production of Vino Santo Trentino or Trentino Vin Santo, by drying Nosiola grapes on reed trellises.

Vino Santo Trentino Doc: the raisin of raisins

Vino Santo Trentino Doc, a Slow Food Presidium - not to be confused with vin santo - is the passito that comes from the berries of this vine: Nosiola grapes, dried for over 6 months on special racks, called arèle, are pressed during the Santa (from which it takes its name) and after a slow and long fermentation, the result is a wine of great softness, with the right balance of sugar and alcohol content, rich in aromas and flavors that make it unique: with an amber yellow colour, pleasantly sweet, with an intense and ample aroma, Vino Santo Trentino Doc has in fact a generally very low annual production.
