It may also be true that the English are still gnawing after Manchester United's elimination (complete with a dubious refereeing episode) to Real Madrid in the Champions League round of XNUMX, but the indiscretion published today in the British newspaper The Independent has been confirmed also by the vice president of the European Commission Joaquin Almunia: Florentino Perez's club is officially under investigation by the EU for "irregular state aid".

At the center of the investigations there would be a 1996 agreement between the merengue company and the municipality of Madrid, guilty of having overestimated some land surrounding the Santiago Bernabeu. In this way the Municipality would have allowed Real, which owns those lands, to sell them at prices far higher than the actual value for the construction of a shopping center and a hotel.

According to Almunia, however, the EU investigation would not only involve Real Madrid, but also other major European clubs. An even more serious case could therefore break out shortly, precisely in the phase of the season in which the national championships and the Champions League are decided, which came alive with the quarter-finals that see Josè Mourinho's team on the field to challenge at the Bernabeu the Turks of Galatasaray. But on Mou's road, it would seem, there are not only former pupils Drogba and Sneijder.
