Clear pronouncement by the former Head of State, Giorgio Napolitano, in favor of confirming the constitutional reform of the Senate in the referendum next October.
In an interview with “Corriere della Sera”, the President Emeritus openly said: “Personally, I will support the confirmation of the reform law approved by Parliament and I hope that the opposing political parties will discuss the referendum in its objectivity. That is, pronouncing on the merits of the reform and its, in my opinion, indeferrability, and not making it the subject of personalized political confrontations” pro-Renzi or anti-Renzi.
Napolitano is also keen to point out that the referendum is not a last-minute invention of the Government but "is envisaged by article 138 of the Constitution, in the event of not reaching two-thirds of the parliamentary majority on the text of the reform, and takes place according to initiatives which the same article regulates. In short, it is not automatic - explains the President Emeritus - and it is not the Government as such that promotes it".
In the interview Napolitano also warns against the risk of "blowing up Schengen" and argues that 2for Italy it is important to dialogue with those who have other positions in the European institutions".
