Health - and beauty - tourists are making their fortune in the Andean country, where the health tourism sector has grown by 14% in the last five years, against 8% for other types of the sector. According to "Health and Wellness Tourism in Peru", a research conducted by Euromonitor International, a British company specializing in market analysis, the number of people who choose Peru to avail themselves of dental care, laser operations, fertility treatments and cosmetic surgery procedures. Where do these tourists/patients come from?
Especially from nearby Chile, but also, thanks to the very affordable prices of health treatments, from far more distant countries, such as the United States and Spain. The flows from northern Chile find in the city of Tacna, located just across the border between the two countries, specialized centers ready to welcome them, while for tourists of all other nationalities the reference city is Lima.
Broadening the scope of the survey, the study highlights how the growing demand for this type of tourism has generated in the areas affected by the phenomenon a significant increase not only in reception facilities, but also in spas, located mainly in commercial areas and luxury hotel.
The research by Euromonitor International thus confirms Peru's entry into the ranks of those Latin American countries – Brazil, Bolivia and Costa Rica – which have made health and wellness tourism a national resource.
