MAXXI and Africa: two exhibitions and three writers to tell the story of the continent

Not only exhibitions on Africa at the Maxxi in Rome. While I'm in progress African Metropolis. An imaginary city e Road to Justice that capture the visitors' eyes, three Afro-Italian writers take the field - on 12 September - to tell the black continent through the words of authors who, despite the differences of origin and destination, biographies and inclinations, are united by the delicate ability to tell in their books the infinite nuances of Africa and its complex diaspora.

As part of the YAP Fest 2018 – the program to promote and support young architecture – on Wednesdays starting at 19pm – an evening of music and readings dedicated to Afro-Italian writers will take place in the MAXXI square: Cristina Ali Farah, Gabriella Ghermandi, Igiaba Scego and Brhan Tesfay, four of the most representative voices of Italian black culture who alternate in the stories and who are accompanied by songs performed by the Romolo Balzani Multiethnic Choir. Every foreigner teaches a song that has accompanied him on his journey, everyone learns a song in another language and another culture, and so no one is a foreigner anymore. The road to the feeling of belonging takes the form of daily integration practices.

The writers, Italians with roots in Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, tell of a lively and multicultural Italy, not only on paper, united by the power of the word, by the desire to get to know each other and to share a great common heritage that is waiting to be valorised.

The event curated by Maria Ida Gaeta and Isabella Ferretti is organized by Maxxi in collaboration with the Municipality of Rome, the Libraries of Rome, the Massenzio Literature Festival and 66thand2nd. Admission is free while seats last, while myMAXXI card holders can book by writing to amymaxxi@fondazionemaxxi.it, by the day before the event for 10 available seats each.
