The future heir. Conversation on the Continuity of the Family Business (book)
The new essay by Emmanuel Priest - that for Firstonline has published several articles – on generational passages which observes the issue from a different point of view and touching on the more existential and emotional themes. Emanuele Sacerdote traces the salient points on the theme of the continuity of the family business in thirty-three speeches. “My biggest fear is that there isn't enough space for everyone, as the company is not big enough at the moment. We grew up together and we are united, but there are personal differences to take into consideration for how we were educated and how we matured. If I asked my father and my uncle they would tell me that now this is not a problem, that the succession issue will be resolved soon and that there will always be room for everyone. Unfortunately, my perception is that these aspects will be the source of internal disputes, rightly or wrongly.” The book begins with a question faced by the future heiress of a family business: what should I do to become a better heiress? The central object of the essay is the continuity, the inheritance of the identity and industrial heritage, to be passed on to the next generation. The theme of generational change is a hot topic for entrepreneurship in a historical moment of epochal changes. The narrative mode is direct, dry and personal and takes place through a personal conversation between a differently young heir and a young future heir curious to improve herself. The essay is inspired by real life experiences and describes the time interval in which the future heir prepares to enter the venture and precisely the future time, i.e. the time in the making, is the architrave and the supporting corridor on which it is weave the cloth. The work traces a path in stages on the generational passage which is not simply the transfer of witness, but the frontier of salvation, insurance coverage, genetic innovation, congenital and organic turnover, the exchange process, the balance between similarities and differences, capable of fortifying the company of being and of preparing the company of becoming. The development of the essay intends to go beyond the simple description of the passage by advancing into little treated arguments and suggestions which, however, if unmarked, could facilitate the understanding and relationship of the parties involved. The construction of the book winds along a path in stages that offer an unprecedented view on the conceptual and practical aspects, but also emotional and rational, referring to the most intense and salient moments of inclusion, triggering and settlement. The structure of the book consists of four chapters – continuity, progress, and awareness independence – which in turn unfold in thirty-three insights without a predetermined logical-sequential order. The book has no real conclusion as it refers to evaluations, indeed self-evaluations, which require further work. The book
