Digital transforms healthcare: towards personalized medicine

The new digital technologies at the service of science and medicine.

From Artificial Intelligence to Big Data, innovation is radically changing medical science, causing a real revolution that has increased investments in the digital healthcare industry fivefold since 2011.

To try to find out more about what is happening, but above all the developments that could arise in the near future, the conference "The evolving role of the medical scientist in the digital era" was held - created and supported by the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation in collaboration with Cariplo Factory which was attended by a panel of industry experts of the caliber of Alberto Mantovani, scientific director of the Humanitas University, Stefano Calciolari, associate professor of the Bicocca University, Arturo Chiti, professor of Diagnostic Imaging of the Humanitas University, Gioacchino Natoli, professor of Biochemist of the Humanitas University and Marco Blei lawyer expert in issues related to privacy.

According to what has emerged, the new technologies will be able to favor and walk in parallel with the new trends in medicine which increasingly places man at the center and not just the disease to be treated.

“The encounter between new technologies and medicine is generating an extraordinary impact both at a clinical level (thanks to the possibility, for example, of remotely monitoring the patient through sensors), and at the level of economic impacts on the healthcare system and scientific research. Being able to easily share and cross-reference the data of a specific disease collected from patients all over the world, in fact, helps to have increasingly accurate statistics on its evolution and on the measures to be taken to combat it”, explains the Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation.

The most important revolution in the last twenty years has been seen in the world of biomedical research, a science that has undergone radical changes, influencing biology and medicine, but also genomics and related technologies such as DNA sequencing and gene editing , which constitute the main innovation in this sense and drive the transition towards personalized medicine.

Focused on the patient, personalized medicine will help improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment, favoring the transition from a centralized health system (hospitals) to a widespread system at the community level thanks to new technologies such as social, mobile, analytics and cloud (workplace, family environment).
